Shakuntala is trying to sneak a look at the man she loves by pretending to pluck a thorn from her heel.

There is no right answer to this one. There are many opinions that find symbolism in different images in the painting. My simplistic take is that the man is broken-hearted after his wife left him.

Christina’s World

As a child, Christina developed a degenerative muscle condition that left her unable to walk. As an adult, she refused to use a wheelchair, preferring to crawl, using her arms to drag her lower body along. The painting depicts an ordinary day in her extraordinary life.
